Welcome to My Personal Page!
On October 15th, I will be riding in Spin For Kids to raise money for Camp Twin Lakes, an incredible organization that provides camp programs for children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other life challenges. In 2016, Camp Twin Lakes served over 10,000 campers, levereged support from 3,500 volunteers, and subsidized 70% ($550/week) of the direct camp costs for every camper served.
Why I Ride
In January of 2007, our family lost one of our brightest lights and biggest smiles, Austin Davis Somers. Exactly one year later, I began volunteering at Kate's Club in his memory. Kate’s Club empowers children facing life after the death of a parent or sibling. We create healing communities through recreational and therapeutic group programs, education, and advocacy. Our vision is a world in which it is okay to grieve. Camp Good Mourning is the highlight of the year for Kate’s Club members and volunteers! This special annual gathering brings kids together in a traditional camp setting to enjoy activities, friendship and to learn how to deal with their grief in a positive way. At Camp Twin Lakes kids swim, hike, rock climb, play music, make arts and crafts and attend the annual camp dance. Children also participate in grief support activities which support sharing their loss with their peers and learning new ways to cope with their feelings. Camp costs about $500 per camper, and as with all Kate’s Club programming, we offer it 100% free of charge to members and their families. Being able to do this could only be possible thanks to our partnership with Camp Twin Lakes. What I remember most about Austin was the way he would light up when children were in his presence! It is my hope to carry on his light to other children through my work with Kate's Club.
In addition to volunteering at Kate's Club, I am a Special Education teacher and the proud of aunt of a nephew with special needs. I see children daily that fight a little harder to do what all the other kids are doing. Camp Twin Lakes gives ALL children that opportunity!
I'm participating in Spin For Kids because I want to make a difference in the lives of all CTL campers such as the kids of Kate's Club. Every $110 I raise funds a day of camp for a Camp Twin Lakes camper. During just one day at CTL, that camper could climb the rock wall for the first time, share a hidden talent at a talent show, learn about healthy eating through a fun cooking class, and make new friends who understand what it's like to take medicine every day or spend time in the hospital. Camp gives kids an opportunity to build their confidence and capabilities without worrying about their extraordinary day to day challenges.
Why You Should Sponsor Me
100% of the money you donate goes directly to campers at Camp Twin Lakes, so your gift will truly make a difference in a child's life! I'm taking the challenge to ride and fundraise to give children an incredible Camp experience, and I hope you'll support me as I change gears to change lives!
